Exercising your CSR

When a business takes account of its economic, social and environmental impact, it is said to be addressing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). All companies have a duty of care, not only to their customers and staff, but also to the environment and anything else that is affected by the company's activity. Most businesses impact on the environment in one way or another; often this impact is negative and anyone who is making a profit whilst the environment suffers should be taking action to address the problem.
Businesses have been slow to introduce CSR practices into their operations believing that drastic change is required to reduce their impact.However, all contract cleaners, product managers and company decision makers could be exercising their CSR by using eco-friendly microbiological alternatives to chemical products that are available on the market.
In reality companies that address their CSR will benefit in a variety of ways; not only will responsible companies prosper in terms of new business and better press, but they will also incur far less paper work, as most microbiological products are COSHH free. Most importantly, through the use of microbiological products, the health and safety of staff is not put at risk.
In the future it is likely that under the REACH directive, increasing amounts of chemical related legislation will come into effect and in the long-term there may be tax levy's applied to chemical use and companies could face financial penalties if they don't amend their ways.
If those in the cleaning industry don't consider their CSR now then it is inevitable that business will suffer.The customer will look to other more sustainable, ethical and greener alternatives and if your company isn't moving with the times it is at serious risk of being left behind.
